Book Update (A List of Hopes)

An icon of a zip file and the text K–12 Educators Data. Guidebook v1.1.zip

The K–12 Educator’s Data Guidebook manuscript is done and ready for editing! It’s weird that an entire book gets sent to a publisher as this picture of a zipped up package containing countless 0s and 1s.

Even weirder that I can type on my laptop and have it instantaneously appear in front of my editor while he’s typing on his laptop.

But it’s apt when I think about how this book turned out. I started writing it as a data manual for K–12 educators. Then I heard the stories of actual educators and learned it had to be more than that. It couldn’t only be about getting good at data. It had to be about relating to data. Technical is about craft. Practical is about what’s personal.

So back to the 0s and 1s. We can let them be just numbers if we want. Or we can choose to make them something more meaningful.

Technical is about craft. Practical is about what’s personal.

I can’t wait to get this book edited and ready to share with you. I hope it feels like a different kind of data book. I hope it reads like a conversation. I hope you want to keep it in your bag or at the office so it’s ready for you when you need it. I hope it helps you when you’re stuck with a problem, relaxing on your lunch break, or researching for a project. I hope you write all over it, dog ear it, see yourself in it, challenge it, feel challenged by it, and do whatever you need to make it yours.

While I wait for the good folks at Routledge to start editing, I’ll be making more data and education resources for you on my website. If that sounds useful to you, sign up for my newsletter so I can send you stuff directly.

The K–12 Educator’s Data Guidebook will be out in early 2022, but I’m hoping to announce pre-orders in the coming months.

Thanks for the support y’all!
